Italian silk satin

Satin is a fabric that is particularly smooth. It is no coincidence that its name from Arabic is translated as “smooth”. It is created from silk using a special satin weaving, in which the front threads close the weft, and the weft goes to the front side through 5-6 main threads.

As a result you have a smooth, strong and shiny canvas. It reminds silk in appearance, but satin is much stronger. All the above mentioned characteristics are relevant only for natural satin, which is based on silk threads. There is another kind of satin fabric which contains mostly synthetic fibers. Italian manufacturers produce synthetic satin for furniture upholstery, while factories located in other countries often use it for sewing clothes.

Advantages of Italian Satin Fabrics

Italian satin is a type of fabric that is best known and appreciated all over the world for its vivid advantages:

• Durability, high strength;

• Safety for health: the fabric is hypoallergenic, because it doesn’t allow dust to accumulate;

• Hygroscopicity. Atlas absorbs moisture and get dry quickly;

• Multiple opportunities for design: Italian clothes are distinguished by a variety of colors, textures and patterns;

• Breathability: it is very comfortable to wear clothes made of Italian satin even in hot weather.

Varieties of atlas

The production process of natural satin fabrics has remained unchanged for a long time. However, various combinations of fibers allow you to create different types of satin:

  1. Stretch is a material with contains lycra. It is elastic, well-stretched, works on any figure and doesn’t get wrinkled;
  2. Crepe is a soft material, a bit rough though. Cross threads are tightly twisted resulting such texture;
  3. Dupioni is a soft fabric, very shiny, produced by silk only;
  4. Satin is a combination of silk and cotton. The outer side is glossy, the inner one is matte. It is a very soft natural material that is often used in children's clothing production.

Embroidery, drawings and patterns can be applied on canvas, including embossing and jacquard weaving.

What can you sew with satin?

A variety of textures and drawings allows you to use atlas for sewing different pieces of clothes, for example:

  • Evening gowns, suits and dresses, including wedding ones;
  • Casual blouses and skirts;
  • Women's and children's underwear;
  • Linen;
  • Home textile;
  • Accessories, such as ties, gloves, bows, or hats.

It is worth mentioning that the most durable types of satin are the ones which are used for production of curtains and shoes. The first type is used for sewing curtains and upholstery for furniture, the second one is suitable for the production of ballet pointe shoes.

Natural satin fabric is quite demanding. It must be washed by hand, in cold water, using gentle detergents. Horizontal drying is recommended. You can iron only the seamy side of clothes. These rules will allow you to maintain the noble brilliance and amazing smoothness of a real Italian satin for a long time.
